PARENTING: SMART WAYS TO HELP YOUR TEENAGER CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAREER

Can you recollect the time when your child mentioned what he/she wants to become when they grow up?

In today’s modern world, most children don’t have a clue about what they want to do as adults. This is one of the main reasons why children end up in careers they don’t like. During the teenage years, it’s extremely difficult for a child to make a decision because the part of the brain responsible for decision-making is constantly evolving and developing.

Do you remember the last time you had a serious conversation with your teenage daughter or son about choosing the right career? If you don’t, then you probably should have a conversation.

When it comes to education and a professional career, parental support plays an integral role. According to research, students with full parental support have confidence in their potential. They are more likely to research different careers and choose the one that best suits their interest and their capabilities. As a parent, there are several things you can do to help your child choose the right career path for him/her.

Let’s look at some of the ways to help your child in ways they will be completely satisfied with the choices they make in terms of their professional life.

  • Let your child discover his/her strengths and weaknesses – One of the best ways to help your child figure out a career that best suits their interests is to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes a child can identify his/her strengths and weaknesses by indulging in activities they like. Encourage your child to take part in such activities. Having a real conversion on strengths and weaknesses is also a good idea. Watch your child in action and take notes on her/his strengths.
  • Encourage your teenager to try out different things in life – It’s extremely important as a parent to encourage your child to venture into various activities in life, as this will help them discover their interest. There is a good chance that your daughter/ son might end up choosing a career based on his/her passion.
  • Set a good example – As a parent one of the things you can do to help your child to decide on a successful career is set a good example. For example, encourage your teenager to watch you build a career you really love, this will surely motivate them to build their own. It’s also important to keep in mind that even if you are becoming old, do something you really enjoy as your child might end up following in your footsteps.
  • Discuss multiple options within a chosen field of study – Once your child has decided on a suitable career path, sometimes plans might change for various reasons. In case the chosen path doesn’t work for your teenager, it’s always good to have an alternate plan. Sit with your child and make an alternate plan, this way he/she will be prepared in case things don’t end up according to the plan. An alternate plan can be something related to the same field or different.
  • Encourage your child to talk to a career counselor – It is always better to have a second opinion, hence you and your child should talk to a career counselor. Since these people are professionally trained, they will be of great help.
  • Teach them to be patient – You need to make your child understand that the process of finding the right career takes a lot of time and patience. He/she should know the fact that even though it’s a time-consuming process, in the end, they will eventually grow into a successful individual.
